Isopod & Millipede Crushed Leaf Litter Substrate
This product consists of dry, crushed hardwood leaf litter intended for use as both a food source and environmental enrichment for detritivorous invertebrates. It is suitable for isopods, millipedes, springtails, cockroaches, and other species that feed on decomposing plant matter.
The leaf litter is supplied pre-crushed, reducing storage volume and allowing it to be added directly to enclosures without further preparation. Although compact in form, the quantity provided is equivalent to a significantly larger volume of uncrushed leaves (equivalent to roughly 7-8x of uncrushed leaves).
These crushed leaves are equivalent to:
- 40g -> equal to ~3 litres of uncrushed leaves
- 100g -> equal to ~8 litres of uncrushed leaves
The mix contains leaves from more than five hardwood tree species, providing a varied organic substrate. It may be used as a primary dietary component and as a surface layer or mixed into substrate within bioactive enclosures. The crushed form allows for even distribution across the enclosure and encourages natural behaviours such as foraging and burrowing.
Once introduced to a humid enclosure, the leaf litter supports the establishment of microbial and fungal communities that facilitate decomposition and nutrient cycling. With time, the material will further break down into leaf mulch, increasing palatability and suitability for species that preferentially consume more decayed organic matter.
