⨂ ADULTS - Hooded Stag Beetle, (Homoderus mellyi)
Common name - Hooded Stag Beetle
Scientific name - Homoderus mellyi
The listing is for 1x adult beetle, of an orange coloured stag beetle species that are well known for their extraordinarily shaped thorax, which overhangs and forms a hood over their mouthparts.
Please note that this exaggerated thoracic protrusion only develops in large males. In small/medium males, this protrusion/hood is absent and the thorax is smooth.
These are CAPTIVE BRED in my collection, with this stock originating from Cameroon.
Like many members of the rhino/stag beetle families, the males of this species possess large horns/mandibles used in wrestling matches with rival males, while females lack these structures. The adult beetles feed on a variety of fruits such as banana, apple, pear, peach and watermelon. The larvae feed on decaying wood.
