ADULTS - Obsidian Stag Beetle, (Mesotopus tarandus)

Common name - Obsidian Stag Beetle
Scientific name - Mesotopus tarandus

The listing is for 1x adult specimen, of a RARE and highly-sought after species of stag beetle, which is the largest stag beetle species in Africa. This species is characterised  by its striking, jet-black mirrored body, which is unparalleled among insects.

These are CAPTIVE BRED in my collection, with this stock originating from Congo, Africa.

Like many members of the rhino/stag beetle families, the males of this species possess large horns/mandibles used in wrestling matches with rival males, while females lack these structures. The adult beetles feed on a variety of fruits such as banana, apple, pear, peach and watermelon. The larvae feed on decaying wood that has been colonised by the turkeytail mushroom.
