⨂ Red Tail Avatar Millipede, (Salpidobolus sp. "Red Tail Avatar")
*Important notice:*
This listing is for a species that has recently been circulating in the hobby under the incorrect name of Salpidobolus sp. "Avatar". This is NOT the original “Avatar” millipede, but a separate, undetermined species. Please ensure this species is kept separate from true Salpidobolus sp. "Avatar (original)" to avoid potential hybridisation and ongoing confusion in captive lines.
Key distinguishing features between Salpidobolus sp. "Avatar (original)" and this new species are as follows:
-
Preanal ring & anal valves colouration:
Red in this species vs. yellow in "Avatar (original)" -
Yellow dorsal markings:
Begin from approximately segment 5 onwards in this species vs. from the collum (segment 1) in "Avatar (original)" -
Lateral silver/grey highlights:
Absent in this species vs. present to varying degrees in "Avatar (original)"
Common name - Red Tail Avatar Millipede
Scientific name - Salpidobolus sp. "Red Tail Avatar"
The listing is for 1x captive bred animal, of a RARE, gorgeous species of millipede that is characterised by its striking, wasp-like markings of yellow and black, and its yellow/pink legs.
As of 2026, there is a new, different species also being misidentified and sold as Avatars, but this new species is unrelated to the original Avatar, and should be kept seperately in culture to prevent hybridisation in the hobby and millipedes being missold as one another.
These are a surplus from a WC breeding group purchased from various European sources, for a captive breeding project. This stock originates from Sulawesi, Indonesia.
The juveniles and adults feed mainly on decaying wood and leaf mulch (decayed leaf litter). Additional supplements such as calcium (limestone/cuttlefish bone), fruits & veg, moss, and protein such as fish food should be offered as part of their balanced diet.
